What: Springfield City Council positions for Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 5 are up for election during the Primary Election on May 18, 2010.  Information packets are available online or can be picked up at the Springfield City Manager’s Office.  Potential candidates are encouraged to set up a meeting with the City Recorder who can provide an overview of the election process.

When: Deadline for submitting completed candidate packet with signatures is March 9, 2010.

State fines Leiken for campaign finance violation

The Oregon Elections Division fined Springfield Mayor Sid Leiken $2,250 after an investigation into $2,000 in campaign funds Leiken used to hire his mother to conduct a poll.

Neither Leiken nor his mother could produce documentation for the poll, Don Hamilton with the Oregon Elections Division told KVAL News, prompting the fine for converting campaign funds for personal use.

Leiken says with the issued resolved he can now focus on jobs.

Leiken paid back the money and apologized to constituents in August.

Leiken asks state to complete inquiry into campaign issue

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The mayor of Springfield has asked state elections officials to end an inquiry into an alleged campaign violation and determine a penalty.

Springfield Mayor Sid Leiken sent a letter to the Oregon Elections Division received Monday admitting he inadequately documented the $2,000 he withdrew from his mayoral campaign committee to pay his mother for polling services.

Democrats filed a complaint a month after Leiken entered the race for the congressional seat held by Democratic U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio.

Community input sought for Springfield capital improvements

Springfield News Release

The City is developing its Capital Improvement Program (CIP), a Community Reinvestment Plan, for the next five years and is seeking suggestions from Springfield residents for capital improvement projects.  Examples of the capital projects include construction of streets, sewers, sidewalks, and bike paths.  Other examples are installation of street lights and street trees.
